 25 man squad size

The news about Woodgate is no surprise but I've not heard anything about the 25 man squad size anywhere else!

That could leave teams like Man City and Chelsea in all sorts of trouble in terms of keeping players happy.

Last I saw was that Man City have 37 players - transfer deadline day could prove to be very interesting this year.

Where do youth players figure in to the 25 man squad?

From what I read it's a 25 man first team squad, but that can be supplemented with U21 players.

From January they can then make changes, not sure what the rules are around that though

I think I read that Man City are only realistically 3 or 4 players over the 25 as they have a lot of kids there, which is why Balotelli would be a good signing for them as at 19 he need not be in the named 25 man squad.

That 3 or 4 players over includes the likes of Robinho, Jo, Caicedo, SWP, Ireland and Santa Cruz and think most folk would be very surprised if they're all there at the start of the season.

Not sure whether the press are making a big deal about this 25 man thing as there's very little transfer activity just now and they need to fill the pages. If anything for players like Owen Hargreaves and Jonathan Woodgate it might be a blessing in disguise as they and their managers can write them off for months knowing there's no opportunity for them to play and they can concentrate on getting fit

I think in January clubs can make a maximum of 3 changes to the 25. Regarding City, as well as the fringe players who will no doubt be leaving Michael Johnson is unlikely to be 100% fit until nearer Xmas so he can be omitted from the initial 25 as well.

UEFA have been going on about a rule like this for a while but nothing has been done, think the Premier League came up with the 25 man squad, homegrown rules etc to try and counter whatever UEFA eventually put in place because one proposal if i remember rightly they had was a lot more severe than what the Premier League have come up with.

mcfc i dont think there is a limit of changes in January.

You're right about January GJS, just checked out the EPL rules. The UEFA/FIFA proposal was for 6+5 in a team's starting line-up, the 6 being home nationality IIRC but it fell foul of EU employment laws.
