 Disappointing crowds?

Just reading the Courier and Yorkston saying that he is disappionted with the turn out for our pre-season games especially the Man U game.

I personally think the club were deluded in the fact that a Man U youth team would somehow pull a big crowd. Also watching Hibs, Hearts and Aberdeen is hardly a crowd puller as we play them every year and have done many times over the last decade.

Pre-season friendlies are half paced and boring most of the time.

If you want to fill EEP for the 125th anniversary then you need to get a big name club with some big name players. Not easy to do I know, but don't be suprised when 2500 people turn up to watch a bunch of laddies they have never heard of.

They should have let everyone in for £2 and they should have let school kids in free!

Getting in Man Utd for the 125th anniversary was a mistake. We only played them a couple of seasons ago and they were always going to send up the youth team.

They should of got a game against a team wee've played in Europe or had another Legends match, that would have pulled more of a crowd.

Valencia
Everton
West Brom

These teams were put forward many a time, were they even apporached ?(I doubt we would have got Valencia but the other two maybe)

Raith, Falkirk, Airdrie and Cowdenbeath their combined historical achievements are forever in our shadow.

Sorry to spell it out but Man U, Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen & Arbroath x 2 means there are six games for punters to shell out on before a ball is kicked properly in anger.

The board are deluded if they were expecting anything more than a couple of thousand at any of the games.

Choosing Man U for the 125th anniversary was misguided, although I appreciate it's not exactly easy to attract big names to a first division side pre-season.

...IMO they would have had more intrest if they had the game into the season on a Wed night. Football in July is just an incovenience to many people.

Crowds were more than I thought they'd be to be honest. Holiday time for a lot of folk, not cheap for a kickabout, used to be included on season tickets and numerous matches to fork out for.

Prices are scandalous. The price to get in should be halved. At least try it and see if the crowds improve.

Thing is Yorkston isn't really bothered by the fact that the crowds are down, its more an interest in the money not gained he cares about. Halving the gate money would not double the crowd.

Seeing as most of us had just watched matches every night of the week since the season ended because of the world cup and a lot of people don't know whether they will still have a job in the next few months I think the crowds were pretty reasonable.

The club trying to drum up some interest by talking about an exciting mystery club for the 125th anniversary was a PR backfire. Had they just come out with it and said it would likely be the youth team then people wouldn't have been so underwhelmed and might well have gone along.

Spot the mistake;

"It's holiday time and money's tight. Obviously we'd have hoped for more than the 2000 we had last night, but it's still holiday time. We were also expecting more of a crowd against Manchester United, as it was to celebrate our 150th anniversary.

They've (the board) only got themselves to blame. I have been to the Man Utd XI game and Arbroath, and intended to go to the East Fife game but couldn't make it in the end (thank god!) but have no interest in seeing us playing Hearts and Aberdeen in friendlies. I mean how many times have we played them down the years? Loads.

I would have went and watched them play Aldershot or Hereford had they been arranged as although they are not glamour ties at it's something different.

It has to be remembered that the fans will only increase as our relative success does and as we are flying in the 1st just now it's not a big surprise that the numbers have decreased.

The pricing doesn't exactly encourage many new faces through the gates, expensive lark following a football team.

Time for some fresh thinking for the Pars and the board.

I think the only disappointing crowd has been the Arbroath game, and hopefully the wee 3 game unbeaten run will help with the attendance tomorrow and it at least climbs above 1000.

Crowds for friendlies are never going to be more than 1 - 2000 unless it IS something special.

5 friendlies in just over 2 weeks as well as 3 competitive games to pay for before we get to use our season tickets unfortunately mean sacrifices have to be made.

I'm gutted to have missed 2 good wins, but missed both so I could go to the two cup games and to Falkirk instead - much more important imo to attend the competitive fixtures.

I went to the Hibs game only as it was the first game of the season and went to East Fife as it's still relatively rare to play them / enjoyed last year!

I'm not interested in watching us play teams we have met regularly (even if not recently) or could draw in a cup, or someone's youth team. I missed the Hearts and Dundee Utd games last season too.

It would help I think if we are playing a few home games pre season, if one or two of the games were included in the season ticket package as I certainly would have attended the games I missed had they been so, for example.

What happened to old mini tournaments that used to be the basis of pre season friendlies, English team, Welsh team Irish team, Scottish team easy as, being honest, bit of edge, something different and something to play for.

Wouldn't imagine it would be really hard to arrange using EEP over 2 weeks with the other local teams also hosting the guest teams over the fortnight.

I've got a good way to get crowds back Mr Yorkston. What about a real challenge for the title!

Because DAFC are not as big a club as many of us think we are. How many teams from England or abroad would want to come to east end nowadays? if we are lucky we could maybe, if pushed and a few favours are called in we could possibly get a Man U youth team. If you think getting them were easy, or maybe we could have got a better quality team then you are deluded.
There are a lot of things that the club can do and there are a lot of things that they cant, but does anyone seriously think that they aren't doing their best for the club......if you think not then put your money in and have a shot yourself.
I am getting sick and tired of all the moaning and groaning on here. we are a provincial club who have done better than most in the last decade, and for those that remember the second division in the early 80's things could get a lot worse before they get better......................................rant over.

As soon as that game was announced as a Man United "X1" it was destined to be a low crowd.

The planning for the pre-season friendlies was good in thought ie the teams we have played in cup finals, but it was never marketed as this. The crowds may not have been much higher but at least the enthusiasm could have been ramped up a little with some decent marketing (how many times has that been brought up??)

Man U was just a waste of time, I only hope that we didn't pay them anything to send up a youth team.

If DAFC isn't a big club, then a crowd of 2500 for a practice match against teenagers is a very good turnout. However, if we're one of the 'sleeping giants' of Scotland... not that this means much to anyone outside Scotland... but we shouldn't be dishonouring the 'big time' Pars teams of the past by celebrating 125 years with a match against unknown teenagers - whether or not they're in Man Utd jersies. To me, that was a self-condecending move by the board, and - as mentioned above - if they had only organised a match similar to Petrie's testimonial, for a time when most folk are not off on summer holidays, it would have been a more fitting and respectful tribute to our history, with at least twice the crowds.

After renewing my our season tickets I decided not to go to any pre-season games purely for financial reasons.

Friendlies aren't really a spectator sport IMO. I never watch any of the pre season tournaments and I certainly wouldn't pay to watch one. It's just a bunch of players doing their best to avoid injury.
