Many of the coaches I encountered did nothing but pander to the technically "gifted" players. Making the rest of us who were good at other stuff like running fast or being big and strong feel decidedly second class.
I spotted Kenny Dalglish on TV the other day confirming that too many youngsters are told they're "gifted" far too often and told to practice far too little. He said it's especially bad once players reach the first team as they think they've made it and even the little bit of practice they used to do becomes too much effort. Dalglish said when he hit the first team, that's when the real practice began. I also spotted Beckham saying something similar.
Dalglish was gifted great spacial awareness but using it to good effect was all down to practice.
