 £10k Pay Cut
Topic Originator: Kendo

Apparently Luke Young won't move from Villa to Liverpool because it would mean a pay cut of £10k a week.

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/football/view/146854/Luke-Young-won-t-take-Liverpool-pay-cut/

Now, if he was on £11k right now, £1,000 per week would still make him better paid than an awful lot of the rest of us.

I'm not saying that would be right. I just wonder what bubble these guys live in. It's not as if, with this paycut he would struggle to feed, clothe, and put a roof over, his family.

If you are asked to take a pay cut and you are on £50k a year you may have difficulties because of your mortgage and family commitments, but in most cases you would adjust.

If you are on £25k with a mortgage and familty to support any paycut is likely to hit you very hard. And that's by no means the level of income some families have available.

But if you are on tens of thousands of pounds a week...

a choice between an extra 10k, or a pay cut I wonder what I would pick

Raith, Falkirk, Airdrie and Cowdenbeath their combined historical achievements are forever in our shadow.

FE,

Oh, I know I'd miss £10k really badly. I also know it's not fair to single out Luke Young. I just can't see him missing £10k like I would.

I question the motivation. Stay at a team where you are not wanted (if you believe the Star), or go where you are wanted.

The report does mention he's worried about not being a regular. Surely that isn't going to be the case at Villa either. Maybe he'll go for £10k less as long as he has a good chance of regular games and the money question is unfair ;-)

I'd sit on the bench for the extra 10k!

I'd do even less than that!!!

The report does mention he's worried about not being a regular.

Why should he accept a £10k pay cut to move to another team where he is going to play the same or less amount of games? If he's going to move then surely he has to make sure he gets the best deal for himself both football wise and financially.

You also can't compare 'normal' people to footballers when talking about money. It's all releative, he's being asked to take a 20% pay cut and whilst he won't ever spend his wages every week, I'm pretty sure he spends a hell of a lot more a month than you do.

I dont get it, if another employer came in for you and offered you less money for doing exactly the same thing as you are doing now what would you do? uproot your family and take the pay cut?

I dont know anyone who would take a pay cut in that situation! not his fault blame the folks who handed out the contract!

How is he a chancer? He has a contract for one amount, and he's been offered less to go elsewhere, and he doesn't wish to accept the offer. How is he being a chancer :oS

Remember also that a footballer is finished as a player by his mid thirties.

Its just the way the game is just now, he has a year to go on his contract - would be silly to take a 10k pay cut to more or less do the same job at Liverpool as he arguably has a better player in fronot of him at Liverpool in Glen Johnson than at Villa, will be interested to see what happens near end of transfer window when clubs have to announce their 25 man squad, i can see villa giving him a pay off as it makes sense to them

The thing about it is, I understand why he wouldn't move. I also didn't want to make this about Luke Young specifically.

I just wonder, if he was a Pars player, and the clubs finances were at stake, would we all feel the same. I've noted lots of times where players here were cited as greedy.

i also wonder; he's got bargaining power this year. A £10k paycut now? Unemployed next year? Squad are being cut to 25. I expect there's going to be a big surplus of EPL next season.

Kendo, you're reasoning only has logic as a fan. You think the priority is to be at a club where you're wanted and to play regular first team football.

Most players are motivated purely by their pay packet and who can blame them. I'll bet most Pars fans would play for the Pars for nothing, but I doubt whether any of the current players would...............

Ok, I take on board what's being said. It is understandable that you will take the most money on offer. I agree, who wouldn't?

I guess it's just the indictment of the game that we've let it get players' bargaining power so advanced, that they are costing clubs too much money.
