He harboured a severe grudge for the way BM messed the Pars about playing in a crucial relegation game against Dundee United at the end of 1972 season.

What Happened VEE ? I must have been there but have totally forgotten. I assume it was the game after we won at Ibrox ?

I remember Mitchell being accused of not trying because he was off to Aberdeen and rumours of a bust-up in the dressing room after the game.

Barry Mitchell my main man at the time was alledgedly gubbed by Dave McNichol after the Anderlecht game at East End Park in 1969.

Barrie Mitchell scored 2 goals in a home game against Arbroath on 26th October 1968. I remember it well. I wasn't there as I was at the birth of my son.

Still don't remember anything about the incident with McNicholl/Callaghan. Too many games I guess.

Thanks Gents.

Found this on the Past Players section of the COWS

" His Dunfermline career came to an acrimonious end on 29th April 1972 when, on the morning of a match that would determine the club's fate, it was reported that he had already agreed to sign for Aberdeen. The Pars lost to Dundee United and Mitchell was given abuse both on and off the field. "

Remember him being given abuse at the ballroom, when he claimed he wasn't interested in Par as he was off to Aberdeen.

He runs a pub not far from me. Might pop along and ask him what happened.

remember the Dundee Utd game well,Mitchell never tried a leg and deliberately shot wide on a couple of occasions when right in front of goal, about 20 fans waited outside for him and he had to get a police escort along Halbeath Rd/Appin crescent.About 5 mins later daft Terence (rubber lips as he was called)threw a brick through the back window of a Dundee Utd supporters bus!

Not the pilot VEE. The Coach and Horses in Greasby.

The Pilot is no more. Never went there but I'm told it was an "interesting" boozer

Galashiels - yes, that was right after the 4-3 win at Ibrox, when we lost 0-1 to Dundee United at EEP, last fixture of 1971-72 season, in front of a decent attendance.

My memory of the game itself is a bit erratic - somebody may have missed a crucial penalty that day ?

He clearly wasn't trying a leg and rumours (later proven correct) were flying about that he'd already agreed to sign for Aberdeen.

Plenty of other stories, as mentioned above, about teammates reaction to his attitude and performance.

Jim Leishman will know, he was there or thereabouts.

Wirral - ta.

I believe BM was the publican at "The Pilot" before it was demolished.

If you get the chance to visit the C&H in Greasby I'm sure a few older regulars here would be interested to hear his line of defence.
