Arbroath look a no bad team on paper. A few seasoned pros in there for 3rd division side.

good score in the end, arbroath goals handed to them on a plate unfortunately.

good to see kirk getting another 2, wee joe looked a threat all day long as he did in midweek, mcdougal took goal very well and willis had better 2nd half than 1st by some distance,

comment of the day from back of main stand regarding the main standside assistant on his level of ability as proportionate to his level of hair was superb!

when we move the ball quick we look very very dangerous, joe cardle especially now picking more and more correct options in the final 3rd of the pitch which is a good sign.

agreed with the above, didn't move the ball quickly enough at times and i hope mason is not taking the burke role of giving the ball away on the edge of his own box!

good to see 5 hitting the netr and te players being clapped off the park hopefully tehy do us proud next week!

Cant complain....

....Strange old game 1-1 until the last 13 mins then 5 go in. I thought we did okay created loads of chances but when it's 1-1 & getting late you start to think about the "sucker punch" but thankfully it never came. Pick of the goals IMO was McDougals, threw a couple of dummys made half a yard & rifled it into the far corner. Lots of good intelligent build up play - mentions in depatches for Cardle & Phinn who both played well. Saying this Arbroath gave us a lot of time on the ball. It's going to be a lot tighter next week. Good to see us grind out a result without Graham or Bell.

Minor gripes - Smith....We are going to loose goals this season if he won't come for the ball. Really early on he let it bounce into the six yard box but Woods cleared. The first Arbroath goal was comical with Smith calling for someone to mark the forward on his own in the 6 yard box. Everyone looks at everyone else - No one marks him - Ball comes in - Smith stays on his line 0-1. He just needs to be more commanding in the air.

Could have scored more.......but that's just being greedy!

Good day at the office.......well done Pars.

Cardle & Mason.......!

aye, for the build of smith, you want him to be more commanding in his area, still there is time, there needs to be an area though where the centre halves can be confident of the keeper coming for it.

Have wings, will fly.

I would personally play Allison as when he has been given a chance he has done well. Its still early but Smith is shipping goals and I dont think I could bear it if we concede a howler against the tinks next week.

...We Will Win...

Berkey what are you slavering about. This current team is SCREAMING out for Burke. Mason has never been a brilliant passer of the ball, rather a ball winner. Burke is by far the best passer in the team and compliments the wingers superbly.

Berkey is right though. Burke does have a habit of slack passes to the opposition around 20 yards from our goal.

Aye thumbs down for Burke who actually looks for the ball constantly, and is happy to take the ball whether under pressure or not. I doubt he means to give it away, give the boy a break.

wouldnt blame Smith for the first, not his fault Willis wasnt doing his job in marking Sheerin and it was too far out for Smith to get to i think.........apologies to Willis if that is wrong but every corner in the first half after it thats who he was marking. Phinn going forward got into good areas but again defensively, tracking midfield runners he just doesnt do the job which quote McIntyre "Nicky.....every game!" is a worry when its still happening.
Play Allison next week, not a chance for me, team screaming out for Burke again no for me Mason can do the job equally as well if not better.

same as last week when we moved it quick we looked good going forward, got a few breaks and deserved the win in the end. hopefully Graham and Gibson will be fit to add to the 16 for next week.

Thought it was a decent performance, but i have to say smith was poor. Yes GJS the marking was dreadfull for the first goal, but i would expect a half decent keeper to keep out what was a weak header straight at him. He looked ridiculous at the second goal.
He is well overweight, looks unfit, indecisive and not very agile. I fear he will cost us dearly this season.

first goal ill wait to see again on the highlights then, the second he looked ridiculous? give me a break. ball is bent behind the defenders who all stood off him right into the corner, he was probably unsighted as well because of those defenders but id doubt he would have got to it with a clear view anyway, good finish imo

First game for me this year and nice to get back to it. Obviously we deserved to win, but losing 5 was probably a wee bit harsh on Arbroath who competed pretty well for much of it, first half in particular. However, they really didn't threaten very much after going ahead, and their keeper made two excellent saves to stop us going 2-1 up before making a complete mess of it when we finally did get ahead.

Overall not too bad, and we made plenty of chances to score in the second half. My first impression of the new defence is that it looks much the same in standard as last season. Perhaps that's a bit unfair on them as, like has been mentioned, the defending from the midfield players often wasn't what it should have been and in that sense I think we missed Bell who is far more likely to put a tackle in than Phinn. The biggest concern though is how dodgy we looked at balls into the box. The loss of Graham Bayne hurts us just as much in this sense as it does at the other end. I don't think Smith was at fault for the first goal, it just looked to be absolutely awful marking. The next corner we defended OK but the one after that wasn't too good either, and it's going to take quite bit of work to improve that based on today. I find it quite unbelievable that Smith is being blamed by someone for the 2nd goal as well - as GJS says, it was right in at the corner and was a very good finish, although it came from slack play, Gary Mason I think it was who gave it away on the edge of the box. I don't think Smith did much wrong today, and it must be annoying for him to lose two goals in a game like that.

Quite a bit still to work on, but overall we did what we needed to do, and that was the main thing. Nice to see us score a few goals as well after going behind.

"comment of the day from back of main stand regarding the main standside assistant on his level of ability as proportionate to his level of hair was superb!"

It was me who was guilty of that one!

Have to say I thought Smith was at fault with the first goal. Very soft hands indeed and he is way too heavy, needs to lose weight bigtime.

He also needs to stay in his box more as any striker who is watching what is going on around him will try to chip him.

Not impressed with his start to the season.

thought we defended poorly today and if we play as badly next week we will conceded more than two, midfield without bell looks weak and i dont understand why nicky phinn never seems to be able to tackle or track a runner.
Upfront lacks any sort of arial ability and as a result we didnt win many headers froms et pieces, the main positve is we created plenty of chances when we got the ball on the deck and passed it about a bit and took most of them and as socks said there keeper made a couple of great saves.

1885 a bad year for cricket

but a great year for football

Will be interesting to see the highlights but I think the first goal had a lot of small not so much errors, but discrepancies that lead to it. Whole team switched off a wee bit at the free kick so Willis had to stretch to concede a soft corner. The ball that came in should've been cleared by a man at the front (ie, 'the first defender' who is there for the very purpose of picking out short balls). it was then in an area where I'd always like to see the keeper coming for it, I'm sure the header was from about 3 yards out and the there didn't seem to be any bodies in the way. Then of course, the runner should've been picked up and allowing them to score a stooping header from that distance from a corner is a definite concern.

for the second, there was bad pass from Mason but the boy did well to get across with us on the back and absolutely no blame can be put on the keeper.

I'm happy enough with Smith, but there needs to be a better understanding between him and the defence on the corners, commanding his area more (which he clearly has the build for) will really help.

Have wings, will fly.

Good result for the Pars but I do worry that we have conceded 2 cheap goals against a third division team, abeit a very good third division team.
